about COMMON FOLK at The Regent Club.
COMMON FOLK aims to be a friendly, welcoming place for all cultures to perform their music and customs. Folk music, stories and Folk tales and poetry are universal.
Everywhere in the world different versions of the same desire to tell of experiences and share with others is expressed by ordinary common people. You find folk who are not brilliant singers or instrumentalists can convey just as much joy or pathos as those who are very accomplished.
We really do appreciate that for beginners performing to an audience can be stressful. It definitely gets easier and so we would love you to be confident that you will be in a very supportive environment.
Our definition of Folk music is very broad. There are clubs that prefer “traditional” songs and tunes from the time that everything was passed on by an oral/aural transmission. COMMON FOLK believes that in this age of technological awareness the channels for transmission of songs, tunes and stories is very widespread. Very recent popular tunes are just as relevant to the idea of Folk music as traditional songs from centuries ago. Indeed without innovation and new expressions of experience we might as well be living in caves.
Everyone is welcome to perform “their” music be it a song, a dance, a tune, or stories and poems. All we ask is that it doesn’t need a microphone or amplifier.
